I'm wondering if it's a bit of urban legend that the GD sometimes took LSD before shows....I find it hard to believe that anyone can play decent(or any) music while hallucinating, I've heard it about the 8/27/72 and 5/26/73 shows. I can understand playing drunk or stoned on bud, but LSD? whew! Any truth to that legend? And if so, please point me to an example in this Archive's shows

OK, I'll bite. Yes, it is true. Check out their Acid Tests in the late 60's. A specific example to playin' while trippin' is the famed "Mescaline Show." Take a listen and if you are familiar with the Dead you will easily pick up the subtle (and not-so-subtle) nuances to that 5.11.78 performance. Not to mention it is a great show too. Here's the SBD version:

hmmm...maybe it's possible, but for that tight exactly perfect sound of the late 70's? I've had the Springfield SB several years, maybe time to re-listen! I haint dropped since the early 70's...hell, I could barely function while the world was melting and pulsating all about, heh! well, maybe if I were a musician I'd understand the possibilities. I'd forgotten about the Acid tests, uh, what date is that "Mescaline show"?

uh oh, flashbacks! shoulda red yer 1st reply better...I'll have to google that show for some history of it. Example-a good friend of mine was at the Kezar show of 5/26/73, and he said platters of LSD were being passed into the crowd...I think Stan Owsley was a roadie or soundman then. Wonder if anyone taped Waylon Jennings opening set

I'd love a copy of that Waylon Jenning's set. Oh boy, that would have been quite the evening.

LSD affects different people differently. Some people find it very disorienting; others not so much. Back in the seventies, I not only played music with people while tripping, I wrote software while tripping. Good software that other people used. Yes, the Dead famously took LSD at their shows (especially in the early days--Ken Kesey wrote a novel about it), as did many other bands back then.

What I find amazing is that people can play when they're drunk. I find alcohol to be far more debilitating than LSD ever was. A few drinks, and all my skills start going down the tubes, and I get stupid, ign'ant and sloppy. But, y'know, people are different.
